Development

Throughout the design process, three preliminary versions of the PEACE Scale were developed before finalizing the finished product. Each version was evaluated with the breakdown scale:
  • Supporting clarity of communication
  • Minimizing sensory overload
  • Using literal language
  • Allowing for alternative communication methods.
The design process was a crucial step in refining the PEACE Scale to better align with the communicative needs of autistic children in healthcare settings.

Prototype #1

The first Prototype (Displayed below) used a clean circular layout to reduce sensory overload, but lacked text and alternative communication methods, making it unsuitable for nonverbal autistic children. It also wasn’t practical for printing in healthcare settings.

Prototype #2

Prototype #2 (Displayed below) addressed the gaps in the first version by adding a body diagram, based on research showing autistic children better identify pain on external bodies due to limited interoception. However, it still lacked space for verbal cues and weakened visual cohesion.

Prototype #3

Prototype #3 (Displayed below) combined the strengths of prior versions, using a split vertical layout to show pain levels and adding space for text. It maintained simplicity, offered an alternative communication method, and used calming pastel colors, meeting all four criteria for supporting autistic children.
